New principal a St. Mike's U. lifer

TORONTO - Domenico Pietropaolo has been appointed the new principal at Toronto’s University of St. Michael’s College. His five-year term is effective July 1.

“St. Michael’s already has a very distinguished history of scholar- ship and students,” Pietropaolo told The Catholic Register. “And I hope to be able to continue to develop that further to help the St. Michael’s community reach a higher level of excellence than they already enjoy.”

Pietropaolo said he’s very pleased to be taking on the position.

“For me, I’ve never really left the college,” he said. “I’ve always been a member of it. I was a student there and I have been teaching on the campus of St. Michael’s College for many years.”

Pietropaolo received a bachelor of science from the University of St. Michael’s College and an MA and PhD from the University of Toronto. He is the current holder of the Goggio Chair in Italian Studies, professor of Italian studies and drama and chair of the department of Italian studies.

A longtime fellow at St. Michael’s College, he holds cross appointments to the Graduate Centre for the Study of Drama, the Centre for Comparative Literature, the Centre for Medieval Studies and the graduate department of dance at York University.

“I enthusiastically welcome this appointment to our university and we at St. Michael’s look forward to working with him, assuring him of our co-opera- tion and support in his new critical role and responsibilities,” said Sr. Anne Anderson, president of the downtown Toronto college.

Pietropaolo will be replacing Mark McGowan, who has served in that position since 2002. The role of principal has time limits and McGowan has completed a full eight years in the position, said Anderson.

McGowan will return to the college to teach in Christianity and Culture and Book and Media Studies.
