June is Italian Heritage Month

TORONTO - Ontario’s first Italian Heritage Month kicks off on June 2 and will pay homage to the Italian Canadian community’s cultural and religious heritage. Michael Tibollo, president of the National Congress of Italian Canadians, formally introduced the line-up of Italian Heritage Month featuring exhibits, lectures, concerts and other festivities throughout the GTA at a May 11 press conference at Queen’s Park.
“One of the pillars of the Italian culture has always been the religious aspect of it,” Tibollo told The Register after the announcement.
Tibollo said the event is an invitation to Canadians from all cultures and religions to celebrate the rich diversity and history of Italian Canadians.
Five hundred years ago, Italian explore Giovanni Caboto landed on Canada’s eastern shore. Since that time, Italian Canadians have contributed to the fabric of Canadian life by sharing their culture and faith, Tibollo said.
Among the events are: a June 20 concert by the La Scala Chamber Orchestra at the Sony Centre for Performing Arts, a June 12 concert remembering the beatification of the late Pope John Paul II featuring an opera singer from the La Fenice opera house at Vaughan’s St. Peter’s Catholic Church, and a June 12 benefit concert featuring Italian singer Micheal Castaldo with proceeds going to the Caritas Project and ShareLife at Toronto’s St. Bernard de Clairvaux Church. Toronto’s Italian Pastoral Council will also celebrate a special Mass on June 5.
