Afghanistan promise not good enough
September 11, 2008
Prime Minister Stephen Harper's promise to get Canadian troops out of Afghanistan at the end of 2011 is good, but not good enough for Catholics for Peace – Toronto.
CFP spokesman Deacon Steve Barringer wants to hear other parties on Afghanistan exit strategies that might speed up the process.
"If a sooner option is possible then that would be greatly preferable from our point of view," Barringer told The Catholic Register.
Which doesn't mean Barringer is unhappy about the Conservative commitment.
"It's good news," he said. "I'm glad to hear there is an end date."
Harper promised Sept. 10 that he would not just end the Canadian military expedition in Khandahar at the end of this particular mission, but that he would pull all Canadian troops, other than a few advisers, out of the country.
His opponents accuse him of playing politics with the Afghanistan mission.
