Fr. Smith to lead the Basilians

TORONTO - Offering a message of hope to Basilians is the most important job for Fr. George Smith, the newly elected leader of the Congregation of St. Basil.

The 49-year-old Smith was chosen by 58 delegates at the order’s July 4-16 general chapter in Rochester, N.Y., to lead the Basilians for the next four years.

“My first feelings were feelings of uncertainty; I wondered if I had the wisdom or experience that was necessary for this kind of leadership,” said Smith. “But I grew accustomed to the idea that with the prayers of my brothers, I could respond to this new call in a way that would be helpful.”

Smith will begin his term as Superior General on Oct. 1. He will lead the Basilians in areas of focus identified in Rochester, including vocations and a unity of purpose.

In his acceptance homily, Smith recognized what he believes to be his most important role as the new leader. In a time which he acknowledges to be difficult for the Church, he promises “to love, to suffer with and to offer a message of hope” to his fellow Basilians.

“My hope is that the Basilian Fathers may still be able to attract men to our way of life. To priesthood, community and education.”

Smith will also be responsible for guiding members in their apostolic ministry of education and evangelization. The Basilians are largely known for their presence in Catholic high schools and colleges across North America, including Toronto’s St. Michael’s College School and the University of St. Michael’s College.

Smith felt the call to become a Basilian as a young man headed into law school. After meeting a group of Basilians at the University of St. Michael’s College, Smith discovered their unique blend of priesthood, brotherhood and dedication to teaching.

Smith has been president of St. Joseph’s College at the University of Alberta, served on the Basilian General Council for four years and most recently was president of Saskatoon’s St. Thomas More College.

Also elected to lead the order were Fr. David Katulski as Vicar General; Fr. Kevin Storey, Second Councillor; Fr. Timothy Scott, Third Councillor; and Fr. Paul English, Fourth Councillor.
