Sisters continue prayers for Haiti

TORONTO - A religious sister who survived the January earthquake in Haiti reflected on her experience at a prayer vigil in Nathan Phillips Square Feb. 9.
“When you pray ‘Give us this day our daily bread’ think of the Haitians,” said Sr. Mary Alban, CSJ.

Alban was north of Port-au-Prince when the earthquake struck but returned in late January. She said it was a strange feeling to be as equally helpless as the people she was ministering to. In a way, it drew them closer together.
As much as she didn’t want to leave them behind, it was just as well that she came back to Canada, she said, as she collapsed in the airport from heat stroke and fatigue.
“I wouldn’t have been much use to anyone,” she said.
This was the third vigil the sisters have hosted on behalf of the people of Haiti. The first one featured a reflection by Sr. Rosemary Fry who left Haiti shortly before the earthquake.
Sr. Susan Moran, who organized the vigil, said the Sisters all feel so deeply for those suffering in Haiti and Haitians here in Canada.
“We are doing as German theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer says, which is to pray publicly in times of suffering,” Moran said.
