Collins to sit on pontifical communications council

TORONTO - Pope Benedict XVI appointed Toronto’s Archbishop Thomas Collins a member of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications on Jan. 5. He joins Fr. Tom Rosica of Salt+Light TV on the council.

“I look forward to the opportunity to learn more about how the church can communicate and evangelize both locally and globally,” Collins told The Catholic Register in an e-mail.

“The way we communicate our faith is critical especially at a time in our history when we have so many diverse tools at our disposal.”

Collins, 62, has embraced “new media” by posting his lectio divina meditations on YouTube. The meditations, which consist of prayerful readings and reflections on the Bible, are recorded during the archbishop’s monthly talks with parishioners at St. Michael’s Cathedral.

Since January 2007 — when he was installed as Toronto’s 10th archbishop — Collins has posted dozens of podcasts of his homilies and holy day celebrations on the archdiocesan web site (www.archtoronto.org ).
