Tree sales aid Out of the Cold

TORONTO - It’s been a Christmas tradition for the Flanagan family for the past 15 years: Selling Christmas trees for the Out of the Cold program.

This year, as the economic downturn lingers, demand for Out of the Cold programs at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and the First Interfaith group with St. Matthews’ United Church is higher. Flanagan, 50, along with his family, has been an Out of the Cold volunteer since 1994.
In the past three years, Flanagan has raised $60,000 for Out of the Cold through tree sales.
“It’s a necessary thing. It gives you a special feeling when you can help somebody out,” he said.
This year’s goal is $18,000. But Flanagan said they’re having a very good turnout so far and is optimistic they will sell more.
As of Dec. 13, Flanagan had raised $9,730 for Out of the Cold since opening three lots at St. Peter’s Church, St. Clare Catholic Church and Eastminister United Church. Sales run until Dec. 23.
