Newman Centre offers education session on Latin Mass

TORONTO - Have you ever wanted to understand the Traditional Latin Mass? If so, you might consider heading out to the Newman Centre in Toronto on March 20.
An outline and brief explanation will be provided beforehand to guide the congregation as it celebrates its first Tridentine Mass in approximately 40 years.
“Given the fact that we are part of an educational community, it was felt we should at least have an opportunity for people to experience that form of liturgy, be educated in it, so they can be a bit more enlightened on its history as they read more about it, and as they might come across it in some places,” said Fr. Pat O’Dea, pastor of the Newman Centre parish.

Fr. Howard J. Venette, chaplain for the Latin Mass at Toronto’s St. Theresa’s parish, will celebrate the Mass and make himself available for a discussion period following the Mass in the Newman Centre’s Oak Room.
O’Dea said the intention of the 7 p.m. Mass is not to add a Tridentine Mass to the parish, but to experience it as a one-time event.
Several students from the parish’s youth council wondered what was the difference with the regular Mass and its history and spoke with O’Dea about the desire to be better informed so they could explain it well to others.
“In this way, they can hopefully appreciate the way in which things have developed and evolved in the church since the 1960s,” O’Dea said.
Although having the Mass at the Newman Centre was prompted by students, the whole community is welcome.
