Parish hosts Bible reading marathon

TORONTO - It’s going to be a marathon of biblical proportions.
This Lent, 365 parishioners of Toronto’s Epiphany of Our Lord Church are planning a three-day, cover-to-cover reading of the Bible, starting March 20.
The event, titled “From Genesis to Revelation: Bible Proclamation,” will start with an English reading of Genesis by pastor Fr. George Parayil, C.F.I.C. It is scheduled to close with a reading of the Book of Revelation in Italian on March 23 at 9 p.m. by Fr. Domenico Rettura, C.F.I.C.

The event, titled “From Genesis to Revelation: Bible Proclamation,” will start with an English reading of Genesis by pastor Fr. George Parayil, C.F.I.C. It is scheduled to close with a reading of the Book of Revelation in Italian on March 23 at 9 p.m. by Fr. Domenico Rettura, C.F.I.C.
The reading is modelled after a multi-faith, marathon Bible reading initiated by Pope Benedict XVI in Rome last October which was broadcast live on Italian state television. It lasted for seven days and six nights, and featured about 1,300 readers, including former Italian presidents, soccer stars, foreign diplomats and opera singers.
“Basically, (it’s) to read the Bible and invite people in the parish to listen to the word of God being proclaimed,” said parishioner Robert Edwards.
The event will also be a fund-raiser for the parish, said Edwards. There has been increased demand for the services of the St. Vincent de Paul Society due to the economic downturn, with families seeking help after a parent has lost a job, and seeking assistance in paying rent or buying groceries, he said. Other funds could also be directed towards the Out of the Cold program and church repairs. Parishioners are encouraged to have their reading sponsored, similar to a walkathon, he said.
The parish plans to have 365 readers to mirror the calendar year. There will be a calendar booklet which will include a photo of the reader and his or her reading as a remembrance of the event. Commemorative t-shirts will also be made for the event.
