A message from the Capuchins of Central Canada marking their serving of 1.5 million meals to those in need during the decades-long operation of St. Francis Table.
Nestled in the Parkdale neighbourhood of Toronto for more than 38 years and a vital part of our community, this 'restaurant for the poor' reached the 1.5 million meal mark on May 19. One of our regular patrons, John Anderson was the recipient. Our doors opened on Christmas Day 1987 following a survey that indicated a food service ministry to the poor as a number one need.
St. Francis Table is a ministry of the Capuchins of Central Canada, relying solely on a generous donor base and dedicated volunteers who are both part of the backbone of our ministry.
Foregoing government funding and corporate sponsors we are blessed with the ongoing support of individuals, families. school and church groups, service agencies and even strangers who see the valuable work of feeding the hungry in a dignified manner.
Br. John Frampton, OFM Cap Provincial, has served in his role as animator for 21 years and is responsible for overseeing more than half of meals provided.
Our patrons come from all walks of life and include the homeless, those struggling with addictions, seniors on fixed incomes, parents and children. Patrons are asked to donate $1 for each meal to uphold their dignity and self-worth.
Next door, the St. Clare Centre serves as a Health For All clinic. Fourth Year nursing students from Humber College are on site during the fall and winter semesters. Physical food and medical attention provide a more wholistic approach for those we serve...our patrons!
On June 5, 2026, from 11 am to 1 pm. St. Francis Table will mark the serving of 1.5 million meals with invited guests including Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow and NDP MPP for Parkdale-High Park, Alexa Gilmour.
Br. John Juhl, OFM Cap Provincial, and Br. Ignatius Feaver OFM Cap and other friars will gather with staff, volunteers, guests and patrons in recognition of the milestone reached by this charitable organization. Who would have guessed that St. Francis Table would serve 1.5 million meals and still be going strong for almost 39 years in the heart of Parkdale?
