Christ the King (Year C) Nov. 20 (2 Samuel 5:1-3; Psalm 122; Colossians 1:12-20;
Luke 23: 35-43)
When and where was David anointed king of Israel? Take your pick — Scripture
reports three events, in 1 Samuel 16:13, 2 Samuel 2:4 and 5:3. We could go
through all sorts of tortured explanations in an attempt to harmonize the text,
or we could accept the more likely reason: they represent three separate
traditions regarding his rise to power. Regardless of the explanation, the mere
fact of having a king represented a step backward for Israel.
