On Dec. 8, 1854, Pope Pius IX proclaimed the dogma of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the dogmatic bull Ineffabilis Deus. Since then, Catholics have celebrated the feast of the Immaculate Conception each year on the anniversary.
