When the first edition of The Catholic Register rolled off the presses in 1893, none of those involved could have imagined just how far their new endeavour would go. There’s no way that even the most perceptive of them could have foreseen the digital age that would sweep the world, bringing with it a rapidly changing media landscape.
Luckily, those of us who have succeeded our Register forefathers have done what we can to keep up with modern technology over the years, what it offers us, and, in turn, what it allows us to do for you, our loyal readers.
That has brought us to the latest feature The Catholic Register has on offer, and which we launch today: Registered, the Register’s first podcast highlighting the Catholic world over the previous seven days and our coverage on all of our platforms.
We’re quite proud of our fresh new podcast, hosted weekly by Editor Mickey Conlon and Luke Mandato, one of our reporters. Each week we will run though the headlines that captivated the Catholic world, particularly for Canadian Catholics, with a roundtable discussion of the top issues and what they mean to us, and to Canadian Catholics overall.
Joining us on this initial podcast, and sure to be among our regular guests, is Quinton Amundson, our man in Calgary, who along with Mandato dissects the upcoming canonizations of Carlo Acutis and Pier Giorgio Frassati, set to be elevated to sainthood by Pope Leo XIV in Rome on Sunday.
Other topics covered on the inaugural episode include the Catholic response to the proposal by Quebec’s government to ban public prayer and a look at how media-driven animosity turned American singer, songwriter and pastor Sean Feucht into a household name in Canada.
It’s just the beginning of what we hope will inform, educate — and hopefully — entertain our readers about the issues near and dear to the hearts of Catholics. We’re starting off small, planning to get our feet wet and tinkering with the podcast along the way so that we can get it right. So please have a listen to our first episode, available here, and our weekly additions at podcast.catholicregister.org. We hope you will enjoy it and take the journey along with us as we grow this new endeavour in our modern Catholic world. And please, let us know how we are doing, good or bad, so that we can bring you the best show possible.
