Pope Leo XIV has accepted the resignation of Bishop P. Fabbro, CSB, of London, and has appointed the current Bishop of Peterborough, Daniel J. Miehm, as his successor.
Miehm will be installed as the 11th Bishop of London on June 29, the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul, at St. Peter’s Cathedral Basilica in London.
Fabbro submitted his resignation before turning 75 last November, as required by canon law. In a statement, he said he is "profoundly grateful for the countless blessings I have received during the 24 years I have served as Bishop of this diocese." He also offered warm words of welcome for his successor.
“The people of the Diocese of London join in thanking God for this appointment and will welcome Bishop Miehm warmly,” said Fabbro, who was ordained a priest of the Congregation of St. Basil in 1980. “I’ve known Bishop Miehm for many years and am confident that he will be a good shepherd to the faithful of the diocese. He comes to us with a wealth of experience as Bishop of Peterborough. He is a strong, compassionate leader with outstanding pastoral instincts and the wisdom to guide our diocese into the future. Under his episcopal leadership, the Diocese of London will be in very capable hands."
Miehm, 65, who has served the Peterborough diocese since 2017, greeted his future flock and commended Fabbro for his leadership.
“With gratitude to God for many blessings over these past nine years as the Bishop of Peterborough, I now prepare to embrace a new responsibility in my ministry,” stated Miehm, ordained in 1989 in the Diocese of Hamilton. “I feel humbled to be called by the Holy Father to serve the Church as the Bishop of London. I am grateful to the Holy Father for his confidence in me, especially as I follow in the footsteps of Bishop Ronald Fabbro, who has given such stellar leadership in the Diocese of London, and to the Church in Canada. It gives me both encouragement and consolation to know that he will continue to reside in the diocese, and I pray that he may continue to enjoy good health as he enters retirement.
"I look forward to serving the people of the Diocese of London, and to working collaboratively with the clergy, consecrated men and women and lay members of the faithful,” he continued. “I know that I will be assisted in this important work by a very dedicated and able diocesan pastoral and administrative staff as we move forward together.”
In a separate statement to Peterborough Catholics, Miehm said he does “recognize the great debt I owe to the clergy, religious and lay faithful of the Diocese of Peterborough, among whom I have been privileged to live and serve for nearly a decade. It has been a joy to minister here, and I have been consistently moved by the depth of faith and the commitment to the Church among the good people of this diocese."
