Flying the flag

April 2, 2025

Regarding The Catholic Register’s recent report on Toronto City Hall banning the Vatican flag, it’s worth recalling that Frank Klees, former MLA for Newmarket Aurora, tabled a private member's bill "An Act to declare Pope John Paul II Day" in Ontario. Klees was inspired by John Paul II’s role in the fall of Communism in 1989.

He enlisted thousands who signed petitions of support. When the office of Benedict XVI was informed, the pope's secretary of state wrote to Mr. Klees assuring him of prayers for success. The Ontario legislature honoured the memory of the Pope's significant role as a peace maker rather than his religious beliefs.

This distinction appears to have been either forgotten or disregarded by current Toronto civic officials.
