Newman's legacy
September 17, 2025
Regarding your report "Path paved for Newman to be Doctor of the Church", when Pope Benedict travelled to Birmingham in 2010 to beatify Cardinal Newman, it was a heart-felt tribute from one theologian to another. In a faith where "In the beginning was the Word" a Doctor of the Church has a spirit-sustaining role.
Saint Cardinal Newman is of particular import being a convert, a renowned academic and made Cardinal by Leo XIII in 1879 in an age of relentless secularism. He wrote, "The energy of a river depends on the firmness of its banks" and his entire life was dedicated towards shoring up those banks. May his legacy be the same.
