Remember context
October 25, 2026
Regarding Quinton Amundson’s Oct. 11 column, “Remembering others at a time to say thanks,” I was troubled by its inclusion, without context, of the interviewee saying she could not find love or generosity in the Quran. The column presents her account appreciatively, without clarifying it was her personal response to her reading.
The interviewee has a right to describe her experience, as the columnist did to celebrate her discovery of the Bible. The problem is the broad, unqualified, characterization of the Quran. Readers may form the impression Christianity offers love while Islam does not, an unfair generalization.
A Catholic newspaper can celebrate an encounter with Christianity yet acknowledge love, mercy and generosity are important in Muslim faith and practice.
