Mass effect

In the March 9 Catholic Register, Luke Mandato presents data on Mass attendance in Toronto and other Canadian cities. Attendance virtually ceased during the 2020-2021 pandemic-related parish closures, and has not bounced back.

Many Catholics do not realize being physically present at Sunday Mass is a requirement of canon law. According to the Sunday Visitor Catholic Encyclopedia,"The faithful are obliged to participate in the celebration of Mass on all Sundays and holy days of obligation. This is a grave obligation, and willfully to neglect it can constitute serious sin." In Canada, local bishops granted a dispensation from this obligation during the pandemic. The dispensation is no longer in effect.
