Chastity first
September 5, 2025
Lea Karen Kivi’s recent column in the Register suggested the pro-life movement should teach young people about consent in romantic relationships. Sexual assault is front of mind with the recent acquittals of the five Canadian National Junior Hockey players. We absolutely should discuss the importance of consent. That said, doing so would play a limited role in preventing abortions as sexual assault is the cause of just one per cent of abortions. More impactful would be discussing the importance of chastity. The Sexual Revolution toppled proper understanding of the marital act but the Catholic Church has stood firm in defending the traditional view, grounded in natural law. If we are to build both a Culture of Life and the Kingdom of God, we must restore a full understanding of sex and its proper place. Its rightness or wrongness does not solely hinge on consent.
