Visual liturgy
March 1, 2026
As a professional iconographer, I was moved by Luke Mandato’s story on Maria Guadalupe Levangie and her description of the spiritual journey from darkness to light during the icon-writing process. Her point that the gilding of gold is the "crescendo" of this microcosm of faith resonates with my own practice at Iconoria. Use of traditional materials like egg tempera and gold leaf is not just technique but a profound form of visual liturgy. Such retreats coming to Canada help the faithful rediscover icons "windows to Heaven" for a direct encounter with the Divine.
