More protection needed for religious freedom, says Rabbi Sacks

Rabbi Jonathan Sacks urged religious people not to allow the debate about religion and violence to be dominated by people who don’t understand religion March 15.

The Jewish argument for freedom of religion is embedded in the Old Testament, the former chief rabbi of Britain told an enthralled audience at Toronto’s Glenn Gould Studio March 15.

Vanier’s ‘revolutionary reality’ lives in L’Arche

L’Arche founder Jean Vanier will be donating the prize money from his Templeton Prize win back to his charities. The Canadian will formally receive the honour May 18 in London.

In 1964, when Jean Vanier quietly launched L’Arche, he says he had “no idea that this would be a revolutionary reality . . .  that it would grow.”

L'Arche founder Jean Vanier wins Templeton Prize

Jean Vanier, left, with Amanda, a member of the L’Arche community in Canada. Vanier has won the 2015 Templeton Prize for making “exceptional contributions” to affirming the spiritual aspect of life. He said he will donate the money to his charities so that they can expand the work for people with developmental disabilities internationally.

Jean Vanier, the Canadian advocate for people with developmental disabilities who helped create an international network of residential communities that champion the rights of their residents, has won the 2015 Templeton Prize.

Dalai Lama takes 2012 Templeton Prize

WEST CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa. - The Dalai Lama was named March 29 as the winner of the 2012 Templeton Prize.

A statement from the John Templeton Foundation, which selects the winner, said his “long-standing engagement with multiple dimensions of science and with people far beyond his own religious traditions has made him an incomparable global voice for universal ethics.”

The prize, which includes an award of about $1.7 million — the monetary award must always be larger than those offered in the Nobel Prizes — will be presented to the Dalai Lama in London May 14.
